SHORT POINT & BACK LAKE
Short Point beach is that great spot to park and watch the waves, see whales from shore or go for a walk and explore the rockpools.
Short Point Beach is located about 2km from the town centre, on the headland. A beaut surfing and swimming beach, lifesavers patrol this beach during holidays. It's also at the mouth to Back Lake, so you can go for a stroll around the lake from here or take a dip in either the lake or the ocean.
The elevated carpark is a regular stop for locals and visitors watching the goings-on from this vantage point. This is the spot to watch the waves and brave surfers when the swell is big and the weather is wild from the comfort of your vehicle, possibly with a snack or two!
Known as one of Australia's best land-based whale watching spots, during the season (August to November), it's a good idea to take keen eyes or binoculars as whales are often seen playing not far from shore. Look for splashes or disturbances in the water and have the camera zoom lens ready, great photos have been taken from this spot.
Rock fishing is another popular past-time here, with multiple spots either at the southern end of the beach or around the rock platform to throw a line in. Walk through the foreshore reserve along the walking track out to the rock platform to see the big waves crash or walk along the rocks towards Middle Beach.
There's toilets and picnic tables on the hillside parkland, plus short walking tracks around the lake and headland. One of our most popular beaches - and with good reason.
